Banyoles

Banyoles

Banyoles, capital of the Pla de l'Estany region, is a city of water of medieval origin marked by the Lake of Banyoles, a natural area protected by the European NATURA 2000 network and the RAMSAR seal.

The influence of the lake can be seen in the twenty fishing grounds that surround it, in the Neolithic site of La Draga and in the forest of Les Estunes. It also extends through more than 30 km of irrigation channels that cross the city and connect with historic buildings such as the monastery of Sant Esteve, the church of Santa Maria dels Turers, the Tint, the Pia Almoina, the Gothic wall and the thirteenth-century Plaza Mayor.

Banyoles is a city with a high quality of life, noted for its sporting tradition and its quality facilities, which attract amateur and professional athletes. The lake is an ideal place for rowing training, even for Olympic teams.

In addition to its cultural and historical heritage, Banyoles offers a magnificent natural environment to explore. Nearby you can discover landscapes such as Cap de Creus, the Bay of Roses, the Aiguamolls de l'Empordà, the Montgrí massif and the Medes Islands, as well as picturesque fishing villages such as Cadaqués and Calella de Palafrugell.

You can also visit the ruins of Empúries, medieval villages such as Besalú and the Jewish quarter of Girona, as well as enjoy the ceramics of La Bisbal d' Empordà. The Dalí Triangle allows you to discover the surrealist legacy of Salvador Dalí.

The gastronomy of the area is rich and varied, with the DO Empordà Wine Route that offers more than 30 wineries, and a high level of cuisine thanks to chefs such as Ferran Adrià and the Roca brothers. To complete the experience, Barcelona is an essential visit with its cultural and architectural offer.
